Christopher Swain of Columbia Riverkeeper, Inc. will swim the entire 1,243-mile length of the Columbia River to raise awareness about Columbia River issues and garner support for water-quality programs, he announced at a press conference today in Portland.
Swain's journey will commence in June 2002 at the river's headwaters in Canal Flats, British Columbia, and end at the Pacific Ocean in early November. He expects the voyage to take 160 days, including rest time.
Swain has been swimming more than 20 miles per week, mountain biking and weight training to prepare for the event.
A recently donated 24-foot Bayliner will accompany him on his voyage. Upon completion of the swim, Swain will visually present the water-quality issues facing the Columbia using actual river water samples.
