Last year's number was 450: not a lucky Lottery figure, but the number of families served by the program formerly known as "Toys For Tykes."
With its broadened focus, the county-wide holiday gift program is now known as Hood River County Christmas Project. Next week brings the Thanksgiving holiday and the Nov. 24 sign-up deadline for families and senior citizens in need. Food and toy baskets will be delivered to needy residents. Details on giving and receiving are on page B3.
The project deserves, and will certainly receive, widespread community support; 450 seemed like a large number last holiday season, yet the needs are bound to be as great or greater than in 2001, given the downturn in the economy.
