"Liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others." -- Thomas Jefferson.
America would be much different today if we were a true democracy. Our forefathers wrote the constitution to protect the rights of all people. Democracy does not protect the rights of all people, because it is majority rules. If we were a true democracy we would not care what the minority wants or needs. This would take their rights away as Americans, as in handicapped, elderly, ethnic, and many others.
I am taking a class in government. My assignment was to study democracy and write a letter to the editor. I am able to write this because of my first amendment rights. I was happy to learn that we are not a true democracy, because now I know that our government protects all people. I am 15 years old and look forward to voting in the next presidential election. I'm glad that I have so many rights in this country.
