Ames steps down as HRV hoops coach
Hood River Valley High School boys basketball coach Tom Ames announced last week that he will not return as coach next season. Ames, who is also a science teacher at HRV, just completed his fourth full season as head coach and will remain a member of the faculty.
“I’m walking away from basketball for the right reasons,” he said. “My kids are at the age where they need more of my attention, and I can’t give the program the amount of time and energy it deserves.”
The Eagles are coming off their first 10-win season in class 4A, and their second consecutive 7-9 finish in the Mt. Hood Conference — also a program best. HRV Athletic Director Glenn Elliott said the search for a new coach would begin soon and that the school would like to tie the position to a teaching position.
