Kennedy dominates Skins Tournament
Mary Beth Kennedy (above right) ran away with the Class A title at last Thursday’s Skins Tournament at Indian Creek, taking 17 of 18 skins on the day. Diana Mazeski was the only other golfer to break through in Class A, but the races were a lot closer in Class B and C. Pauline Kennedy (above center) tied Kathie Guthrie (not pictured) with six skins to tie for the Class B title, while Susan Gutzler, Sara Starnes and Clara Rice each had two. Cynthia Brocklesby (above left) won Class C with nine skins, and was followed by Jean Puddefoot with seven, and Sally Walker and Lynn Garcia with one apiece. Pauline Kennedy had the fewest putts on the day with 30. Day’s Play will continue every Thursday this summer, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
CGWA to host Windfest this weekend
The Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association and the American Windsurfing Industries Association are gearing up for Windfest, to be held Friday through Sunday at the Hood River Event Site and Expo Center. Highlighted by Saturday’s Pray for Wind Party at the Hood River Inn, and Sunday’s CGWA Swap Meet, Windfest offers something for windsurfers and non-windsurfers alike. HRV basketball camps upcoming
Hood River Valley High School will be hosting two basketball day camps during the month of July. First up is the July 7-11 HRV Hoops Camp for boys and girls entering 4th-8th grades. Play lasts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and players are asked to bring a lunch and water. Preregistration cost is $85, and will go up to $90 at the door. Also coming to HRVHS next month is the Eagles Varsity Camp for players entering 9th-12th grades. Camp is scheduled for July 14-18 and preregistration cost is $65. The price will go up to $70 at the door. Play is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and players are asked to bring a lunch and water. Call 386-2055 with questions.
Big Winds Waterstart clinics for women
Big Winds will be offering the first of two Women’s Waterstart Clinics on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Led by Big Winds’ best female instructors, these clinics are designed to improve fundamental shortboard skills in a fun, supportive environment. Julee’s hosts cave adventure Saturday
Explore a lava tube formed by an eruption some 1,900 years ago when Julee’s Gorge Tours hosts an Ape Cave adventure at Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Monument this Saturday at 10 a.m. The hike into the cave takes roughly two hours, with a 1.5 mile return hike above ground. Cost is $15 per person and includes a guide and PowerBars. Bring a lunch, and a headlamp or flashlight. Northwest Forest Pass is also required to park, and carpools will be arranged. HRV baseball all-conference mentions
Three Hood River Valley High School baseball players were recently honored by the Intermountain Conference for their performances in 2003. Ryan Pratt was awarded honorable mention as an infielder, Heath Goin was an honorable mention pitcher, and Bryan Nishimoto was an H.M utility player.
GOAL soccer camp coming in July
Sign-ups are now being take for the GOAL soccer camp, which will be held July 8-11 from 3-7 p.m. at Westside Field. Instruction will be provided by top local coaches like Jose Ponce, and all kids interested in improving their soccer skills are encouraged to sign up. Oregon skatepark tours being offered
Tour the state’s best skateparks this summer with Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation. This tour is highly recommended for youth skateboarders ages 12-16, and two days have been selected this summer. The first is July 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will include stops in Hood River, Tigard, McMinnville and Newberg. Registration is required by Friday and cost is $15 per person. The second tour is set for Aug. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will include stops at Burnside, Beaverton, Tualatin and Wilsonville. For more, call 541-296-9533.
