West Side Elementary School students stepped into the role of a firefighter on Wednesday and learned how hard it is to control the spray from a tanker truck. At right, Breanda Meyers waits her turn as engineer paramedic Diedrick Snelling demonstrates.
Above, lieutenant-paramedic Paul Henke shows the hose to Tyler Bennett, Lucy McLean, and Veronica Mendiola.
For more than 10 years, the Hood River Fire Department has been teaching children about fire safety practices. Capt. Clay McCrea said the annual event includes the “stop, drop and roll” drills, lessons about how to dial 9-1-1, and the opportunity to climb aboard the trucks and use some of the equipment. This week the crew visited Mid-Valley, Pine Grove, May Street and West Side schools. They plan to take the same program to Cascade Locks in the near future.
