Horizon Christian School hosted a soccer tournament over the weekend that brought together eight 1A schools from around Oregon. The tournament, separate from the OSAA 1A/2A playoffs, was organized by Horizon to create a tournament for the state’s smallest schools.
Ukiah, Southwest Bible, Central Christian, Damascus, Cascade Locks, Open Door and Open Bible joined the tournament that in the end the was won by the home town favorites. The Hawks, who qualified last week for the 1A/2A state playoffs after a second place league finish, swept the tournament by defeating Central Christian 3-0 in the first round, Southwest Christian by penalty kicks in the second round, and Open Door 3-2 in the tournament finals.
Josh Boyden, Jared Nagreen, Phillip Stenberg, David Rovianek, Sam Seal and Kent Ulend all scored in the tournament, while goalie Cameron Root picked up several saves, including two in the semi-final round penalty kick shoot-out.
After the tournament, coaches voted on tournament honors. From Horizon, Stephen Stenbert, Ueland, Nagreen and Root received first-team honors and Seal and Jason Borton were voted second- team players.
