At the Hood River Elks Lodge annual end-of-year scholarship dinner Sunday evening, Rep. Patti Smith spoke to the 18 “students of the month,” praising them for their motivation, hard work and community service.
“I am just amazed by everything these kids have accomplished,” Smith said. “I just want to challenge you to go out and make our communities better.”
The students and their families were gathered to be recognized for their achievements during the academic year and to await the announcement of recipients of the Elks’ four $250 and two $1,500 year-end scholarships.
Elks emcee George Johnson went from table to table and asked each of the honored students to share their plans for the summer and for the future.
Not surprisingly, the teens had everything planned out: summer jobs, college in the fall.
Johnson and fellow Elk Terry McShane kept score between rival University of Oregon and Oregon State University; U of O came out on top, 5-3.
In the end, it was Jillian Jones, Kristen Hedges, Brian Stenberg and Sean Rosson who came away with the $250 awards.
Meghan Flink and Adam Brown who were awarded the big $1,500 scholarships.
