The Port of Hood River has winnowed down a list of 15 applicants for the executive director job to nine semi-finalists.
On Tuesday, the elected body met with Waldron & Company, the hired search firm, to select the semi-finalists. Another four individuals will be cut from the list on April 10 — and the finalists brought to Hood River 14 days later.
Port President Sherry Bohn said two days of personal interviews will take place on April 24 and 25. She said the candidates vying for the job will meet with a staff panel one day and a community panel the next.
A reception will be held on the first evening to introduce applicants to key government leaders, business representatives and citizens. Bohn said each candidate will be provided with an individual tour of port properties during his/her time in Hood River.
“Within one week of these interviews we expect to have made our choice and come to terms on salary and start date,” said Bohn.
The port is seeking a replacement for Dave Harlan, who resigned in late November and has since taken a job as the Port Division manager for the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department.
Waldron, a Lake Oswego recruitment firm, began advertising nationwide to fill the vacancy in early February. The port has set the salary range for the lead staffer from $73,000-$95,000, dependent upon experience.
John Deller, managing director of Waldron, interviewed 25 city, county and port officials, as well as several citizen activists, before seeking out candidates.
He believed those discussions revealed that, although the port district is relatively uncomplicated to run in the business sense, the political dynamics are “sophisticated.”
Therefore, he felt the chosen director needed to have strong communication skills to work well with a diverse group of interests.
