The Cascade Locks Pirates boys’ and girls’ basketball teams concluded their winning seasons over the weekend with wins against Arlington and Echo. The wins secured both teams seats in this week’s Big Sky East vs. Big Sky West division playoffs in which the top four of eight teams will advance to the next round of the state playoffs.
Game highlights are as follows:
Girls vs. Arlington
The girls defeated the Honkers 37-32 in overtime Friday evening, clinching a district playoff berth on the road. If Arlington had won, they would have positioned themselves to tie the Pirates and possibly force a do-or-die game to decide which team would represent the Big Sky west in Umatilla next weekend.
Nicole Martin started the Pirates rolling with the first bucket of the game, followed by Heather Mohr, who converted a stolen pass into two points.
Arlington would not give up, especially at home on the team’s senior night. The Honkers ended the half up by three points.
Haskins, Mikayla Ryan, Holly Goben and Mohr under teamed up to take a three-point lead in the third, but Pirate turnovers gave Arlington three straight easy baskets and the Honkers built a five-point lead again. The home team finished ahead 24-19 going into the final period.
Martin made a jumper to tie the game with under a minute remaining and neither team scored again in regulation.
Overtime was all Cascade Locks and the girls walked out with the win.
Nicole Martin – 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals
Heather Mohr – 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists
Boys vs. Arlington:
The boys dominated the home team and finished with a ten point, 59-49 victory.
Sam Thomas, Joe Nolin and Daniel Nolin each scored before the Honkers could get on the board.
When the Nolin brothers came out of the game together, the Honkers closed the game to a 14-10 score at the end of the first quarter. Sam Thomas hit a couple threes, the Pirates upped their intensity and focused on their inside offensive game with Joe Nolin and they closed out the second quarter ahead 31-19.
The playoff-bound Cascade Locks boys would not buckle and, despite the Honkers best attempts, the Pirates tacked another league victory onto their winning season.
Sam Thomas – 24 points
Joe Nolin – 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks
Pirates vs. Echo
Senior night at Cascade Locks went smoothly for both teams. In their last league game of the season, the girls defeated Echo 42-24 and the boys picked up a 53-34 win.
