Hood River Aquatic Center
The Hood River Aquatic Center will have special open swims from 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday Dec. 19-23 and Dec. 26-30 over winter break. The slide, rope swing and zip line will be open, and the party room will be available for rental.The aquatic center will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1.
Dec. 17-18 - Blow Your Own Ornament, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Glassometry Studios, 3015 Lower Mill Drive, Hood River. Visit the studio and blow your own pear, apple, pumpkin or ornament. Appointments encouraged. Ages 6-up. For more info visit www.glassometry.com.
Dec. 18 - An Evening with St. Nick, 6 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Hotel, 4000 Westcliff Drive, Hood River. Sip hot cocoa while Santa reads "'T'was the Night Before Christmas."
Dec. 19 - Kids Winter Workshop, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. For students in grades 2-5. This year's theme is "Native Americans of the Columbia River Gorge." Dec. 19 -"Birdfeeders & Bee Traps" trash to treasure workshop, 2-4 p.m. This workshop is open to youth in 4th-8th grades and will be held in the Hood River County Extension Office meeting room. Dec. 19-24 - Free Noon Movie at Skylight Theatre, 107 Oak St., Hood River. "The Santa Clause" and "The Polar Express" will show on alternating days, beginning with "The Santa Clause" on Dec. 19.
Dec. 20-23 - The Polar Express, 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. on the Mount Hood Railroad. Travel through the quiet woods enjoying hot chocolate and cookies served by "chefs." Santa will board the train at the North Pole and give each child a Christmas bell. Photos with Santa will be available after trip. Wear pajamas and bring a copy of The Polar Express book. Dec. 29 - Board Game Night, 5:30-7 p.m. at Hood River Hobbies, 110 Fourth St. Many games will be available to play, or bring a favorite along. All ages welcome to this free event.
Dec. 31 - New Year's Eve Rocket Launch and Contest, at a location to be determined based on weather. Participants should meet at Hood River Hobbies, 110 Fourth St., at noon and will caravan to nearby location in Hood River. Bring your own rocket and engines to launch or enter into the contest or just observe and enjoy. The event is free. Prizes for the most creative rockets. OMSI's Earth From Space Exhibit at the library
A colorful 3-foot globe, the "Magic Planet," with dazzling displays and video films projected onto its inside surface, is now at the Hood River Library.
The exhibit, part of a NASA-designed exhibit called "Earth From Space," was set up by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry will be in Hood River from Dec. 12 to Jan. 31.
The globe itself sits on top of a projector and is connected to a laptop programmed by NASA to show dozens of moving images and programs as the globe lights up and spins. People of all ages can control the Magic Planet to show any of dozens of brilliantly colored displays such as Earth's city lights, climate change, tsunamis, wind streams, ocean currents, geographic features, and much more, including videos about Earth that are projected onto the globe's surface.
Other parts of the Earth From Space exhibit brought to the Hood River library include a table-top spinning praxinoscope, which is a mirrored device showing weather patterns, and a weather-viewing station.

Dec. 19-21- Camp Jingle Bells, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hood River Valley High School, Room B16 (preschool). This three-day camp will provide children in grades K-5 nonstop activity. Fun holiday games and crafts. Supplies and snacks included; bring peanut-free lunch each day.
Dec. 19 - Winter Wonderland Camp, 1-4 p.m. at Our Children's Place. Children will create beautiful handcrafted gifts while hearing stories, singing songs, and playing.
Dec. 24 - Super Saturday, 10-2 p.m. at Our Children's Place. Available to children ages 3 and up. While children enjoy special projects, creative play and new friendships, parents can enjoy some playtime of their own.
Dec. 26 - "Let's Get Out" Kids Winter Adventure Camp for ages 8-10, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Looking for activities for your kids over Christmas break? Send them outside with two-time Olympian Lisa Kosglow for a winter adventure. One day will be spent snowshoeing and the other day cross country skiing as we explore the Gorge in the snow.
Kids will learn basic skills and safety for enjoying winter activities including how to build a snow shelter how to prepare for a trip and what to do if they get lost. We will also do some winter tracking and wilderness awareness activities. Cost includes instruction skis poles boots snowshoes and transportation. Participants are responsible for lunch each day. Location: Coe Building parking lot
