Columbia Center for the Arts and the CAST theater company are inviting regional writers and moviemakers to join in the Columbia Gorge Annual Playwright and Filmmaker Showcase, a new, two-day event scheduled for June 22 and 24.
The showcase is designed to feature one-act plays and short films. Submission deadline for either films or scripts is April 1.
“We are doing a center-wide celebration for our five-year anniversary, offering a variety of events free to the public. We thought with all the amazing talent in this community we would try to offer an opportunity to showcase films and plays,” said Catherine Butler, event organizer and CCA performance coordinator.
“We expect the audience will be principally adults, so plays for children may not be appropriate; however as a community theater we want to appeal to the largest possible audience,” said Butler.
Play scripts must run less than 30 minutes in length. Completed films should be under 30 minutes in length as well.
Acceptable entries will be judged based on several criteria. Butler encourages entrants to ask themselves: Is this material something that an audience will remember and is it a good story?”
Sports-based films will be accepted, but the event hopes to encourage art films as well. Plays classified as drama or comedy are encouraged, with alternate genres also considered. The CAST performance committee will have the final say about play selection for the one-evening play showcase. A special film series committee is also in place to review cinematic entries.“CAST hopes to produce staged readings of the plays,” said Butler, but fully produced versions may also be a possibility.
Films are scheduled for presentation June 22 and plays will be performed on June 24 — both in the theater. The two-day event will be free to the public and offered as part of Columbia Arts’ “Get Centered” celebration.
Please submit play scripts in a Word or PDF document to Catherine Butler at firstname.lastname@example.org. More information on film submissions may be obtained by contacting Butler as well. For additional details on the entire showcase, phone CCA at: 541-387-8877 or visit the CCA website at:
