Hood River Valley High School wrestling hosted Cleveland, Wilson and Columbia high schools Wednesday in a four-way dual meet. The Eagles, fresh off a strong showing last week in duals against Madison and Wilson, went 3-0 on the night, starting with a 48-22 pounding of Wilson in the opening round. Charlie Mallon, Nick Morgan, Juan Karlos Hernandez, Jessica DeHart and Christian Marquez all pinned their opponents in the dual.
Cleveland put up a tougher fight in the second dual of the evening, holding Hood River to a one-point lead going into the last match. At 126 pounds, Marquez won his match by fall in the first round to seal the win for the Eagles. Andrew DeHart, Junior Rojas, Oscar Villegas, Morgan, Hernandez and Jeremy Breedlove also picked up wins for the team.
In the final dual of the night Hood River faced White Salmon’s Columbia High School Bruins. With a four-match advantage due to weight class forfeits, Hood River had the upper hand from the start. Mallon opened the dual with a third-round pin, followed by a first-round pin by Andrew DeHart. Weseman, Morgan, Jessica DeHart and Marquez also beat opponents to secure the win.
With the early season warmup meets under its belt, the squad faces much tougher competition over the weekend at the annual Coast Classic, which brings many of the toughest teams in the state to North Bend for two days of wrestling.
“The Coast Classic is the who’s who of Oregon wrestling, and we want to be a part of that,” coach Trent Kroll said this week. “It feels good starting the season 5-0; the team has gone into the least three events hungry and eager, and that’s exciting. We’ve got 70 wrestlers on the team. For about 40 of them this is their first year wrestling. It’s exciting to look at the future of the team. We’re setting high goals, both for individuals and for the team and we’re going to have to fight to accomplish them.”
After this weekend, the team travels to tournaments in Lebanon and Westview before starting its conference season on Jan. 11 at Pendleton. The next home event will be Jan. 16 against Hermiston.
