Do you have an open heart and some extra time? Here are two local opportunities to give a little time and make a big difference:
n Parkhurst House is seeking volunteers that will spend a little time with its residents doing activities that you both enjoy. If you like any of the following activities, please call Parkhurst House at 541-387-4600:
Playing cards, exercise, singing, playing a musical instrument, watching movies, scrapbooking, sewing/cross stitch, religious studies, bingo, cooking classes, reading books, manicures, facials, massages, gardening, storytelling, poetry reading, sports or board games.
n Start Making A Reader today is getting going again at elementary schools in the Hood River County School District.
If you have an hour once a week to devote to reading with children, SMART is the program for you. Schedules vary at each school, so call any school office to inquire, and leave your name for that building’s volunteer coordinator.
All that is needed is an interest in children developing a love of books. Volunteers read with, or to, the children. There is no teaching involved, just a fun hour with books. SMART conducts background checks on all volunteers, who gather with the children in group settings once or twice a week.
