On Aug. 2, Hood River County School District Supt. Dan Goldman announced that Saundra Buchanan will be recommended as the district’s next chief financial officer.
Buchanan will be formally presented to the Hood River County School Board on Aug. 14. The school district ended a comprehensive search for the replacement of longtime CFO Nick Hogan after he announced his resignation in June.
A representative committee led by Goldman with principals, classified and district administrative staff conducted a series of interviews and thorough reference checks and was ultimately impressed with Buchanan’s record of excellence in the stewardship of public resources and systems-wide leadership in public education.
Buchanan served as chief financial officer of Columbia Gorge Community College for 19 years, providing accounting, budget, risk management and financial leadership resulting in unqualified audit opinions during her tenure and a strong financial position as the Community College sought independent accreditation. She provided effective capital projects financial management in multiple capital improvements, acquisition and expansion projects.
Experienced in district debt administration, she worked with bond underwriters in 2012 to save district taxpayers of Hood River and Wasco County nearly a million dollars through a district bond refinancing over the remaining life of the bonds originally issued in 2005. Her financial administration of federal, state and local contracts provided effective financial management resulting in no audit findings.
Prior to joining CGCC, Buchanan was the manager of administration and finance with the Casey Eye Institute of Oregon Health and Science University. She earned her Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University and Bachelor of Science in marketing from Arkansas State University.
Buchanan said she is honored to serve the students and constituents of the Hood River County School District and to ensure effective financial and operational leadership as a new member of the administrative team.
Hood River County School District Board of Directors’ next meeting will be Aug. 14.
