The Hood River Police Officers Association is offering two $500 scholarships in support of students wishing to pursue higher education. These scholarships can be applied toward tuition, room and board or books.
Although open to everyone, students with aspirations to pursue a Criminal Justice degree will be given extra consideration. Possible planned career fields may include police officer, juvenile and adult probation officer, corrections officer, FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, CIA and Department of Homeland Security.
Applicants must be enrolled at Hood River Valley High School, Horizon Christian School or any other school within Hood River County that is approved through the State of Oregon. The student will be required to enroll with a minimum of 12 credit hours in a degree-granting program.
The scholarship will be given once the student has successfully passed his or her first term with all passing grades and may be used at any university or community college in the United States.
Criteria includes a 3.0 or higher GPA, service to the community and school, high integrity and moral standards, and outside activities, such as home and job responsibilities, and civic and church involvement.
Students will also need to complete a two page essay of no more than 500 words describing what has brought them to their career choice, how they will apply knowledge gained to post-college plans, and aspirations for the community.
Two letters of recommendation from a teacher and a community member, and a copy of high school transcripts certified by a high school official are also required.
Members of the Hood River Police Officers Association will determine the recipients of the two scholarships. The scholarships will be payable upon successful completion of one term (quarter, semester, etc.) and on-going enrollment in a post-high school educational program.
Checks will be mailed to the school’s financial aid office no later than Jan. 30, 2014. The student has up to Dec. 31, 2013, to claim the scholarship, but must notify the Hood River Police Officers Association if he or she does not intend to claim it immediately.
Hood River Police Officer’s Associations scholarship applications can be picked up at the Hood River Valley High School, Horizon Christian School or the Hood River Police Department at 207 Second St., Hood River.
