“A Snapshot in Time,” a new exhibit featuring the works of early Hood River photographer Alva Day, will open Sunday, Nov. 3, at The History Museum of Hood River County. It will be held from 2-5 p.m. in the atrium gallery.
A special program is planned for the exhibit opening day: At 3 p.m. photo collection managers Arthur Babitz and Matt Carmichael will explain a little bit about the history of the Day collection as well as a brief summary and scope of the project to preserve these important images.
At 3:30 p.m., “Alva” himself will be portrayed by Cemetery Tales actor Aaron Nice, sharing a story of a hunting trip to Mount Defiance in January 1915.
The event will also launch a new collection of family-friendly activities and hands-on crafts in the children’s exploration space. This event is open to children and families of all ages.
There is no charge for this event or admission to The History Museum.
Alva Day was born in Golden, Colo., in 1887 and died Nov. 15, 1955. He is buried at Idlewilde Cemetery. Day was married to Io Stewart in 1908. He and Io had three children: a son, Carroll, and two daughters, Helen and Emma.
Day was secretary for the Hood River County Game Protection Association. He also worked for Pacific Power and Light for many years and quite a few of his photographs reflect that connection.
The museum has chosen 20 images from the 2,000 in the collection to showcase during the months of November and December.
In addition to the Alva Day photographs, the exhibit team has created a small display of just a few of the museum’s cameras and film projectors to show the variety and changes in personal photography options over the past century.

Museum closed Nov. 4 for OHC meeting
The History Museum of Hood River County exhibits will be closed to the public on Monday, Nov. 4, to host the Oregon Heritage Commission quarterly board meeting.
The OHC board members are appointed by the governor and are established to secure, sustain, enhance and promote Oregon’s heritage, this nine-member, governor-appointed commission has broad responsibilities as a connector and catalyst for hundreds of organizations and thousands of Oregonians devoted to preserving and interpreting Oregon’s heritage resources.
Its programs include the Heritage and Museum grant programs, technical assistance for heritage organizations, and an annual conference. It also gives annually heritage excellence awards and designates Oregon Heritage Traditions and Statewide Celebrations.
The business meeting will also include a tour of The History Museum and a review of several museum projects that have received grant funding over the past few years including the Photo Preservation Project and the World War II Educational Traveling Trunk.

Volunteers needed for work week
The History Museum of Hood River County is currently experiencing a backlog of artifacts that need to be accessioned and processed into the museum’s permanent collection. This process includes an evaluation of the donated items to determine their relevancy to Hood River County and the museum’s mission. It also includes data entry into the museum collection database, artifact labeling, artifact photographing and archive storage.
“If you are interesting in learning what happens behind the scenes at the museum, you’re invited to join us as a volunteer,” Nice said.
Training for new and returning volunteers will be Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. followed by a work session until 3 p.m. Additional work days will be Wednesday, Nov. 6, to Friday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
