Plein Air show, reading on tap
Join the Columbia Center for the Arts on First Friday, Sept. 6, from 6-8 p.m. for a free public reception celebrating the opening of Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2013 art show. Meet the artists, mingle with other art lovers and enjoy complimentary light appetizers. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. On Sept. 8, join a variety of writers with their freshly written works at 7 p.m. Inspired by various Columbia Gorge locations visited over a five-day period, writers could choose any format — such as poetry, memoir, essay or flash fiction — but were limited to 500 words or fewer. Free admission.
Author Teri Brown visits Sept. 6
Waucoma Bookstore is hosting author Teri Brown for a book signing on Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-8 p.m., 212 Oak St., Hood River. Brown will be signing her new young adult book, “Born of Illusion.” About the book: Anna Van Housen has a secret. A gifted illusionist, Anna assists her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums and mentalists in 1920s New York. As the illegitimate daughter of Harry Houdini, the real trick is keeping her own gifts secret from her opportunistic mother.
‘One From Many’ offers band workshop Sept. 19
Portland rock band One From Many will be offering a free community workshop on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Center for the Arts. The workshop is geared toward kids who would like to talk to the band about music, what it’s like to play in a touring/recording band, and the many opportunities in music that can lead to a potential career in the business. A ticketed, all-ages concert by the band follows at 8 p.m.
Dance at HR Elks Sept. 5
Do you already miss the dancing downtown on Thursday nights? Then head on over to the Hood River Elks Lodge on Thursday, Sept. 5, for dancing to the rhythms of the Mike Stillman Band. The Elks lodge features a 2,000-square-foot dance floor. Basic beginner lessons start at 7 p.m. and the live music starts at 7:30. $5 cover charge per person, no membership is required for this community event.
