Fast and furious was the theme for Hood River Valley High School ski team this weekend in the team’s second race of the season; and much like the first (Jan. 4 Cato Race), Austin Keillor and Lucy McLean had unbeatable performances that brought individual top honors and propelled both varsity boys and girls teams to top finishes.
Held in gorgeous sunny conditions, the slalom race brought the seven Mt. Hood Ski League teams to Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort for slalom action on Shooting Star’s Gemini run. Each skier got two runs down the course, with combined times dictating the final order. For the varsity boys, Keillor posted runs of 34.56 and 32.73 for a combined time of 1:07.29 to beat out second-place finisher and last year’s overall Mt. Hood League champion Eli Holeman, of The Dalles, by more than six seconds. William Lamer was third with a combined time of 1:14.38, followed by Chase Lariza in fourth, Jacob Fischer in sixth and Oskar Anderson in 12th to give the boys a clear team victory.
For the girls, McLean posted 36.2 and 35.48 runs for a combined time of 1:11.74 — 10 seconds faster than second-place finisher Kelli Clarke, who came in at 1:21.84 for the Eagles. Hannah Bergemann followed in seventh, Sam Davies in eighth and Savannah Boersma in 11th to secure the team win for the girls team as well.
Next up for the team is another league slalom race Jan. 25, followed by a GS race the following weekend, both at Meadows.
