Voci ‘around the world’ concerts continue May 11-12
The Voci Community Chamber Choir and Interludes Vocal Ensemble invite audiences to share choral music from around the world, as the singers present two concerts, May 11 at 2 p.m., and May 12 at 7 p.m. Both performances will be in the Bowe Theatre at Hood River Valley High School.
Music director Mark Steighner notes that the eclectic program includes music from 19th century America, Latvia, Sweden, Israel, Africa, and the United Kingdom. “We’re calling this concert ‘Around the World in Song’ because it’s like a musical travelog.”
One of the highlights of the concert will be the premiere performance of a Latvian folk song, “Ai, Dievini,” arranged by noted composer and PSU Choral Director Ethan Sperry. “Ethan has traditionally arranged music from India and other Asian cultures, and so this new piece is a bit of a departure. It is also Voci’s first premiere.”
The Interludes, a small vocal ensemble made up of Voci members, will be adding to the program music by Eric Whitacre, Daniel Pinkham, and others.
The program is free but a there is a suggested donation of $10, which helps support the ensembles sponsored by the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association.
