Fire heavily damaged a home on an alley just south of Hull Street, near 10th Street on the Heights Wednesday night, consuming the garage and a Volkswagen Transporter vehicle inside. No one was in the structure and police and fire reported no injuries.
Cause of the 9:45 p.m. fire is still under investigation.
Neighbors heard a boom and saw a column of gray smoke turn to thick black. Jim Dummer, who lives a block south on Wilson Street, said on Facebook he had smelled a “strange odor” about 15 minutes earlier.
Within minutes, firefighters arrived and knocked down the flames, which were confined to the garage and second story on the east half of the house. Firefighters had to approach the fire on the Hull Street alley, where the front door and garage are located.
Neighbor Scott Baker ran from a block away with his home extinguisher but said he knew right away it would not do much to the fire. He then went to the neighboring home and turned on the garden hose, watering down the building, located about 15 feet away. No other structures were damaged.
Hood River Fire Department responded along with firefighters from Wy’East, West Side, and Parkdale fire districts.
