David and Irene Benton celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary June 8. They were married in El Cajon, Calif., on June 8, 1957. Not long afterwards, David served in the Army and spent a year on an island in the Pacific Ocean. He returned to meet his newborn son for the first time. Dave worked for the forestry department for many years before going back to school to earn his Master’s degree in teaching. He taught history and shop classes in many states, including California, North Dakota, Colorado and Pennsylvania, before retiring from teaching June 1995. Irene worked as a secretary at different locations, including La Sierra University. Their passion for helping kids lead them to foster more than 50 children over the years. They moved to Hood River in 1995, when they purchased the lock shop on 13th Street on the Heights. Now semi-retired, they enjoy finishing their house, fixing cars, and traveling along the west coast to visit friends and family.
The couple has four children: son Daniel of Maryland, daughter Dava of West Virginia, and daughters Darla and Amanda of Oregon. They also have nine grandchildren.
