Musicians are known for breaking things. The other week, I helped out my friends in the Liberty Bond Jug Band, a band, by the way, that technically shouldn’t even need electricity to play music — and by the end of the gig, we had one questionably-functioning pre-amp and another guitar with only five strings left.

Adam Miller, one of the premier autoharpists in the world, a renowned American folksinger and natural-born storyteller will perform at the Hood River Library on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m.

The biggest ale festival yet in the upper valley happens in Parkdale

At the Aug. 9 Solog Summer Fest, meet brewers Jason Kahler from Solera Brewery and David Logsdon and Charles Porter from Logsdon Farmhouse Ales, and sample more than a dozen seasonal and specialty beers from the upper valley. It all takes place at Clear Creek Station (Mt. Hood Railway terminus park) from 1 to 9 p.m.

When I spoke to Paul Basile the other day, a band leader and songwriter for the indie-folk band Great Elk, I wasn’t expecting him to mention Billy Joel as an influential artist. But when he did, the insight brought a smile to my face and revived memories of seeing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.
