James “Jim” Bailey Clement

James Bailey “Jim” Clement passed away at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, Ore., July 27, 2012. He was born Sept. 4, 1934, in Ord, Neb., to Rex L. and Marie M. (Gebauer) Clement. He moved to Hood River, Ore., in 1944, attending Dee School, and graduating from Hood River High School in 1952.
In 1956, Jim joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country honorably until 1960. Upon returning to the Northwest, he worked closely with his father in their carpentry trade.
For several years Jim worked on the expansion project of Grand Coulee Dam. Many locals in Hood River may remember him as the friendly bartender at the Hood River Elks Lodge for many years.
Jim was a member of the Hood River Fire Department, the American Legion and the Hood River Elks Club.
Jim next traveled to the East Coast, settling in Watertown, N.Y. He lived a very quiet life for the next 40-plus years, working at various carpentry and bartending jobs.
When his health began to fail, Jim returned to the Northwest to be close to family, living at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles until his passing.
Surviving Jim are his brothers Paul (Bob) Clement, of Cascade Locks, Ore., and Douglas Clement, of Troutdale, Ore.; sisters Jeanette Schmidt, of Bellevue, Neb., and Betty DeHart Bunnell, of Hood River. Also surviving him are numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his father, mother and two sisters, Avonne Crockett, of Gresham, Ore., and Mary Ann Schmidt, of Bellevue, Neb.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Idlewilde Cemetery of Hood River.
