Nancy Ann Barckley
March 29, 1928 - February 5, 2013
Nancy Ann (Whitmore) Barckley, a resident of Hood River since 1952, crossed the threshold into heaven on Feb. 5, 2013, at Parkhurst House Assisted Living, Hood River, Ore.
Nancy was born on March 29, 1928, to Margaret Helen (Stoppenbach) Whitmore and Lester Leonard Whitmore in Menasha, Wis. Her early schooling began in Newberg, Ore., and continued in Portland, Ore., where she served as Worthy Advisor for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1946.
While attending Willamette University in Salem, Ore., Nancy was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, met and married her husband, Donald Earl Barckley, in 1949 and graduated with a degree in sociology in 1950.
Nancy and Don began their married life together in Salem, Ore., before journeying to Hood River in 1952. Nancy cherished her life as a homemaker, volunteer, leader and friend to many. As a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Nancy’s faithful leadership and organizational gifts were evident throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher, youth group counselor, chair of numerous committees and serving as the United Methodist Women’s vice president and secretary of program resources.
Volunteering for her community was close to Nancy’s heart, participating with the Hood River Memorial Hospital/Providence Hood River Auxiliary and FISH Food Bank. In her earlier years in Hood River, Nancy was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Hood River Garden Club.
Warm and welcoming, a friend cherished by many, who cared deeply about the lives and well-being of young people characterized Nancy, and was lived out in her interest in the lives and activities of her three children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, as well as her advocacy on behalf of groups who were victims of injustice.
She enjoyed baking, and was especially known for her pies. Gardening and reading were also favorite activities.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald E. Barckley, her brother William Whitmore, and her sister Mary Golightly.
Surviving family include daughter Kay C. Barckley (Richard Tyas), of Seattle, Wash.; sons Donald E. Barckley Jr. (Kathi), of Portland, Ore., and Barry C. Barckley (Becky), of Brentwood, Tenn.; grandchildren Kristi (Ben Deschuytter), of Vancouver, Wash., Jennifer, of New York City, N.Y., Kelsey, of Seattle, Wash., and John, of Brentwood, Tenn.; and great-grandchild Nolan, of Vancouver, Wash.
Heartfelt gratitude to the staff and residents of Parkhurst House, who were Nancy’s extended family, offering loving care and friendship.
