December 9, 1987: The historic Columbia Gorge Hotel boasts a traffic-stopping Christmas display this year, with installation of some 65,000 exterior lights. The task took the full attention of maintenance crewmen Tom and Leonard Lindsey — plus an electrician and lots of extension cords. The display has not only attracted motorists from Hood River driving by the hotel at night, it’s slowed freeway traffic on nearby Interstate 84. And next year? The hotel promises an even bigger display.
